I restore and refinish teak, timber and vintage furniture that has become worn, faded, scratched or altered by earlier refinishing work.
Some pieces need a complete refinish. Others only need careful surface work or a local repair. I look at the timber, veneer, existing finish and any previous work before deciding how much intervention is actually necessary.
The aim is to keep as much of the original furniture as possible and bring the timber back to a finish that feels right for the piece rather than making it look newly manufactured.
When Refinishing Makes Sense
Not every worn piece needs to be stripped back or completely refinished.
Sometimes the surface is simply dull, dry or marked from years of use. In those cases, careful cleaning, local repair or a lighter treatment can be enough.
Other pieces have failed coatings, deep scratches, water damage, heavy staining or earlier refinishing that has changed the colour or appearance of the timber. That is when more complete work may make sense.
I also look closely at whether the piece is solid timber or veneer. Veneer needs particular restraint because aggressive sanding can permanently damage it.
The important thing is to understand what can be kept before removing anything.

Most of the pieces I work on are well-made furniture that has reached the point where the surface, joints or veneer need some attention.
Teak Dining Tables and Coffee Tables
Table tops take a lot of daily wear, so I often see faded finishes, water marks, scratches, heat marks and uneven colour.
Sideboards and Cabinets
These pieces often combine solid timber, veneer, doors and drawers. I check the finish, veneer condition and any previous repairs before deciding what actually needs attention.
Chairs and Stools
Chairs often have loose joints, movement and worn finishes. I check the structure first and deal with any repair issues before touching the finish.
Desks and Storage Furniture
These pieces usually show wear around handles, edges, tops and other frequently used areas. I try to improve those areas without making the furniture look over-restored.
How I Approach Timber Refinishing
I start by looking at the whole piece. I check the timber and veneer, the condition of the finish, scratches, stains, loose joints and any previous work before deciding what should happen next.

Different timbers age, wear and respond to finishes in different ways, so I do not use the same preparation or finishing approach for every piece.

What types of furniture do you refinish?

Will refinishing remove the original finish?
Not necessarily. If the existing finish can be retained or repaired, I prefer to keep it. Full removal is only something I recommend when the coating has failed, been badly applied or is stopping the timber from being treated properly.
Can scratches and stains be removed from teak furniture?
Many can be improved considerably, but it depends on how deep the damage goes and whether the piece is solid timber or veneer.
Is refinishing always the best option?
No. Sometimes a piece only needs cleaning, a small repair or limited surface work. I would rather recommend less work than refinish something unnecessarily.
