Who I Am

A practical approach to furniture worth keeping.

I work from a private workshop in Fitzroy, restoring furniture that I think is worth keeping.

I turned the workshop into a full-time business in 2020, but I had already been restoring and collecting furniture for years before that, mostly because I enjoyed the pieces and wanted to understand how they were made.

Most of the pieces I work on are from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Before doing anything, I look at the timber, the joints, the finish and any previous repairs, then decide what actually needs attention.

I like old furniture. Especially good old furniture. My job is to repair what is damaged and bring the timber and original design back without unnecessarily erasing its history.
Services & Workshops

Furniture Restoration Services & Workshops

The work varies from piece to piece. Some furniture needs structural repairs, some needs veneer work or refinishing, and some only needs a careful clean and a few small repairs. I also run practical workshops for people who want to learn how to do this kind of work themselves.

MCM Home Interior Finishing

I also work on timber panels, built-ins, cabinetry and other original details in mid-century homes, repairing or refinishing them without making them look out of place.

Teak and timber furniture refinishing

Teak & Timber Furniture Refinishing

If a finish is faded, scratched, cloudy or badly worn, I strip back what needs to come off, prepare the timber and apply a finish that suits the piece.

Furniture Repair & Structural Restoration

Loose joints, damaged components and old repairs can often be fixed without rebuilding the whole piece. The aim is to make it sound and usable again without changing more than necessary.

How I Approach Restoration

Respect the piece, repair what matters, and keep its character.

I do not believe every old mark has to disappear. Furniture picks up evidence of being used, and sometimes a small mark, a change in colour or an old repair is part of what makes the piece interesting.

Failing jointsIf a joint is failing, I repair it.
Lifting veneerIf veneer is lifting, it needs attention.
Worn coatingsIf an old coating is hiding good timber underneath, refinishing may make sense.
Honest ageIf something is sound and simply shows its age, leaving it alone can sometimes be the better decision.

A good restoration should make the furniture stronger, more usable and better to look at without making you wonder whether it is still the same piece.

A few years ago Rich lovingly restored a Parker sideboard and two Van Treight armchairs that I inherited from my grandparents. His work was meticulous and showed incredible respect for both the furniture and their story.
